"Charlie The Chambers Cow" Original Artwork

This painting was created to honour the resilience of those who build, often quietly and unseen, and the strength required to sustain communities over time.

The Highland cow is used here as a symbol of resilience and stewardship. Historically brought from Scotland and introduced to challenging landscapes, Highland cattle were valued for their ability to endure harsh conditions while restoring land naturally through rewilding and sustainable hedging. Their presence speaks of patience, strength, and the determination required to continue regardless of environment. In this work, the Highland cow reflects the unseen resilience required to build something meaningful and the steady resolve carried by those who continue to build behind the scenes.

The painting contains 24 carat gold leaf, which represents the search for the true gold within people and within their stories. Gold is used here as a symbol of value that transcends time, remaining meaningful and precious regardless of changing conditions. In this work, the gold reflects a belief that there is an enduring worth created within people, something that holds through uncertainty, challenge, and change. As I paint, I seek to uncover that true gold, the value found not only in outcomes, but in character, perseverance, and what is carried forward through culture, memory, and generations.

This gold is woven into the Celtic mantle and into the hair of the cow’s crown. In this painting, hair becomes a place where story is held, carrying movement, history, and identity. The mantle sits as a woven inheritance, reflecting how people carry their heritage and experiences forward. It speaks of continuity rather than status, and of the value found in what is passed on, shaped, and shared over time.

The colour palette draws from the layered heritage of Cheshire West, Chester, and North Wales, and the historic connection and trade between these areas. Royal blue references Chester’s Roman foundations and its role as a place of governance and civic leadership. Subtle greens echo the surrounding landscape and the working land that has shaped the region’s identity. Soft undertones of red move through the work, reflecting energy, exchange, and the flow of commerce. This movement speaks to the heart of the Chambers of Commerce and the role they play in bringing people, enterprise, and communities together, much like the river routes that have long connected these places.

The background intentionally retains areas of charcoal grit and raw texture, held in contrast with the gold. This reflects the reality of building, the planning, effort, and perseverance that often remain hidden behind finished success. By holding both grit and gold within the same space, the painting honours not only what is achieved, but what it takes to build, to endure, and to carry communities forward with integrity.
